Cancer is a type of disease where cells grow out of control, divide and invade other tissues. In a person without cancer, cell division is under control. In most tissues, healthy cells divide in a controlled way and copy themselves to create new healthy cells. With cancer, this normal process of cell division goes out of control. Cancer is a major challenge worldwide and it is expected to increase because of the growing aging population and prevalence of risk factors such as smoking, obesity, long exposure to radiation and chemical material, poor diet, pollution, alcohol, or the genetic defect that can lead to cancer etc.
What is chemotherapy?
Chemotherapy (also called chemo) is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy is one of the most effective and extensive approaches for cancer management. Its one of the conventional cancer therapies aims to either cure or slow down the growth of cancer cells by killing cancer cells directly.
How is chemotherapy used?
There are a number of strategies in the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs used today. Chemotherapy may be given with a curative intent or it may aim to prolong life or to palliate symptoms.
Chemotherapy is primarily used
- Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy: Make a tumor smaller before surgery or radiation therapy.
- Adjuvant chemotherapy: Destroy cancer cells that may remain after surgery or radiation therapy.
- To control recurrent cancer: Destroy cancer cells that have come back.
- To control metastatic cancer: Destroy cancer cells spread to other parts of your body
- To Help radiation therapy and immunotherapy work better.
How does it work?
There are a number of strategies in the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs used today. Chemotherapy may be given with a curative intent or it may aim to prolong life or to palliate symptoms.
A common feature of all chemotherapy drugs is that they kill cancer cells through a process called apoptosis. This is where the drug does so much damage that the cell realizes it can’t repair or function properly and shuts itself down.
